We have quite the little zoo at our house. Dog, cats, hamsters, fish, a rabbit, pet snakes and pet mice. It’s like a whole house brimming with adorable. I love it.
I feel like animals are on a closer frequency to The Great Spirit than humans are. I look into their loving, open little faces and I see The Creator and it fills me with a sense of love and gratitude.
February and March were rough months for us with our pets though. We had a group of female mice who had been with us for two and half years and one by one, we started losing them to the ravages of time. I hadn’t cried that much since the move here. I love pocket pets, but their lives are so heartbreakingly short compared to their intelligence and affectionate ways.
We were down to only two of the original girls and then one day, I could see the light starting to go out of the eyes of our favorite; an adorably chubby little mouse named Frances.
We spoiled her rotten the last few days with us and even though she didn’t feel well, she never once turned down a treat, such was her love of food. When she passed, I buried her in the front yard, close to her other mouse friends, who’d gone before her.
A week went by and then one night, my daughter Kiani happened to glance at the mouse tank on her way to the kitchen for a snack. Frances was there, chubby as ever, running happily away on a little mouse wheel. Kiani said she didn’t think anything of it at first and looked away but then stopped in her tracks when she realized what she’d seen. She turned back, but Frances was gone. There was only an empty, still moving wheel, which came to a slow stop as she stood there watching; no mouse in sight.
This was the first sighting of a spirit mouse in our home, which is surprising considering that we’ve had quite a few mice. When you think about it though, it made sense. With Frances gone, Minnie would now be by herself. Frances must have decided that instead of leaving Minnie, she’d stick around for a while longer. Besides…Minnie couldn’t possibly handle all those delicious food treats on her own right? That’s what friends are for.
